He speaks English, Spanish, Russian and Arabic. During the 1970s, he started to write fiction. In the 1980s he was arrested by US authorities for kidnapping and killing two women in a motel room in New York City. In 1991, he was released from jail and sent back to prison. He was released about four years later. Later he had a restraining order taken out from him for having sex with a woman but it proved to be a false confession. The couple divorced in 2006.
